On 31st January 2001, Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi was convicted of placing a bomb on Pan Am flight PA103 from London Heathrow to JFK New York which in December 1998 blew up over the Scottish town of Lockerbie, killing 270 people.
